Some of the best aspects of being a student at Stanford are found outside the classroom. Stanford’s unique location provides a myriad of opportunities for outdoor activities, music and the arts, rich cultural heritage and sports. The beautiful geography and a pleasant climate year-round lent themselves for day-trips to the Santa Cruz mountains or weekends at national parks, such as Yosemite or Lake Tahoe which are only a few hours away and are both summer and winter destinations. The Bay Area is a hub for countless musicians and artists who tour every year. Stanford brings world-renown performances to campus during the academic year and hosts numerous arts exhibits. Stanford’s collegiate teams are always a big draw—Stanford’s basketball teams have been perennial competitors in the NCAA tournament. For students with an interest in fitness, the new Arrillaga Family Recreation Center, a 70,000 square foot athletic facility that is available for general student use, opened in the summer of 2005.

As a Stanford student, you are guaranteed a spot in graduate housing. Many of the housing units are recently constructed and provide modern furniture and designs as well as the convenience of living on campus. The newly built Graduate Student Community Center adds to the already pleasant communal aspect of graduate life at Stanford.
