My research agenda focuses on teacher professional development. Specifically, I investigate approaches to providing a challenging and meaningful science, math and technology-enhanced curriculum to linguistically and culturally diverse populations. My recent research has focused on the impact of hypermedia authoring on the academic vocabulary development of English language learners. I have extensive experience in developing, facilitating and evaluating large-scale professional development initiatives that have targeted many different education audiences. I have co-authored articles for numerous journals including the Journal for the Education of Students Placed at Risk, the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and Teacher Education Quarterly. She has co-authored two books for classroom teachers, NETS Grades 6-8 Multidisciplinary Resource Units and Teaching Vocabulary with Hypermedia, 6-12. |

* Co-Principal Investigator on grant funded by the Linguistic Minority Research Institute (LMRI). This study investigated the impact of authoring hypermedia projects on the science vocabulary development of Spanish speaking, ESL 6th and 7th grade students.
* Co-Investigator on Next STEP (Sustaining Teachers Exemplary Practices). The goals of this project are to: (1) establish learning outcomes for third through eighth grade math teachers, who are in their third, fourth or fifth year of teaching, (2) develop and implement a professional development program for these teachers to meet their specific curriculum and pedagogical goals related to the new California Algebra initiative , (3) develop a set of standards that move beyond the induction standards and are designed for third through fifth year teachers in California, and (4) increase grades 3-8 student achievement in the algebra strand. A Teacher Quality, Mathematics and Science grant proposal, to obtain further funding for this project, was submitted in October, 2008. |
