Stanford University President Gerhard Casper has named
Deborah Jane Stipek
as the next dean of the School of Education. Stipek, a professor at UCLA's Graduate School of Education, will be the first female dean of the Stanford University School of Education.
A developmental psychologist and seasoned administrator, she heads the UCLA Laboratory School and the Urban Education Studies Center and co-directs the NIMH Training Program in Applied Human Development. She received her PhD from Yale University in 1977. We will profile Deborah Stipek in the next issue of The Educator.

In August 2000, after serving for the past six years as head of Stanford's School of Education, Dean Richard J. Shavelson will relinquish the leadership helm. Recently the Educator queried him about his experiences in the position, his views on SUSE, and his future plans.
