SHIPS - Race, Inequality, and Language in Education (RILE)

Race, Inequality, and Language in Education (RILE) is the newest program in SHIPS.  It brings together faculty from within SHIPS and across Stanford GSE to address critical issues at the intersection of race, inequality, and language in education. Offering a broad, interdisciplinary range of perspectives, courses include anthropological, economic, educational, historical, linguistic, psychological and sociological approaches to the study of race, ethnicity, class, and inequality in education.
 
Students take courses in three broad areas.  The macro-theoretical courses provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the confluence of a broad range of economic, historical, political, social, and cultural factors that shape the relationships among race, ethnicity, inequality, and language in education within and across societies. Courses in schooling in contexts of inequality provide students with an opportunity to apply this theoretical knowledge to educational contexts within increasingly complex and diverse societies, as well as focus on issues of practice and teaching within these contexts. Linguistic diversity and identity courses – highlighting the relationships between race/ethnicity, language education, and identity – allow students to apply core theoretical concepts and to build upon them while considering the challenges of educating linguistically and culturally diverse populations.
 
In addition to these offerings in the Graduate School of Education, students are also encouraged to take courses taught by the numerous faculty affiliated with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity, which offers a diverse array of courses on race and ethnicity, social stratification, and language and cultural theory across the social sciences and humanities.
