With graduation just around the corner, we are wrapping up the academic
year here on campus. We are excited to celebrate the accomplishments of GSE
students this Sunday when families join us on campus for commencement
exercises.
This issue begins with an article about Tamara Wallace, MA ’90, and her
new elective sustainability course for Palo Alto middle schools. The
curriculum is designed to encourage students to consider how they can
contribute to sustainability efforts. Next, read about Professor Jo Boaler’s
new book that argues for greater creativity and playfulness in mathematics
curriculum. Following that is an interview that shares more about the progress
of the GSE’s new building with photos of the construction site. Continue
reading to learn more about leading research from the GSE that shows a
definitive link between school performance and children’s brain development.
Next, Ralph Richard Banks ’87, MA ’87, shares his thoughts on the impact of
Brown v. Board of Education. And finally, learn more about Stanford’s
reinstatement of standardized testing for applicants who apply to the
university in the fall of 2025.
The Connector will take a brief summer hiatus but will return in the
fall. Until then, we would like to congratulate the Class of 2024, and we look
forward to welcoming them as the newest members of the GSE alumni community.
We send you best wishes for a summer filled with long days and warm
evenings under the stars. Thank you for being important members of our
community, and we look forward to staying connected.
Be well,
I-Han

Teaching sustainability
Tamara Wallace, MA '90 is designing sustainability curriculum at a Palo Alto
middle school. The course teaches sustainability practices and encourages
students to start locally.
The construction of the GSE's new education building has proven to be
complex. Senior project managers discuss the joys and challenges of the
north building project.
As only one factor in a holistic review of applicants, Stanford will resume
standardized testing for students applying to be a part of the Class of
2030.
