Understanding and Assessing Social and Emotional Learning in Schools

Several studies in education, psychology, and economics have shown that promoting social-emotional skills during childhood and adolescence contributes to a child's well-being and positive outcomes in life. Nevertheless, conceptualizing and assessing social and emotional learning poses a number of methodological and conceptual challenges. How should we define social-emotional skills? Do we have reliable, and valid tools to evaluate and monitor the development of social and emotional skills; their impact on outcomes, and how they are affected by school programs? The purpose of this talk will be to discuss conceptualizations of social-emotional skills and to propose an integrative set of social-emotional skills that have recently been developed, called the social and emotional big five. Data from a variety of Brazilian studies addressing these issues will be presented.

Bio: Ricardo Primi, Psychologist, Associate Professor at Universidade São Francisco (USF), Campinas, Brazil. Graduated from University of So Paulo with a Ph.D. in School Psychology and Human Development (with part developed at Yale University). He currently serves on the scientific committee for EduLab21 at the Ayrton Senna Institute (IAS) and on the Technical Advisory Group of the Socio-Emotional Skills Study of the Organization for Economic Collaboration and Development (OECD).
