The work of preparing teachers and adequately supporting them in schools requires that we ensure their ability to meet the academic, socioemotional, and sociocultural needs of young people. It also requires countering the normative culture of whiteness in teacher education and the perpetuation of its oppressive and debilitating impact on program design and implementation, pedagogy, and community interactions and partnerships. While the field of teacher education has made strides in efforts to be more social justice focused and responsive to persistent challenges facing teachers, schools, and families, there is still much work to do to eliminate the presence and use of white supremacist logics in teacher education programs, policy development and implementation, research, and practice. In this talk Dr. Carter Andrews explores the questions: 1) Who is preparing future teachers; 2) With whom is program design and implementation being engaged? 3) and, How is programmatic research being conducted in ways that amplify voices, promote equity, and prioritize justice in teaching and learning for the most vulnerable families and communities? Dr. Carter Andrews provides some insight on how advancements can be made in these areas.
Dorinda Carter Andrews is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University. Her research is broadly focused on racial justice and educational equity. She studies issues of racial justice in K-12 learning contexts and in teacher education. Dr. Carter Andrews is regularly consulted by educational stakeholders on how to abolish racial bias in teaching and learning and educational policy. Additionally, she works with civic organizations on how to develop and maintain culturally inclusive, equitable and just learning and work environments. Dr. Carter Andrews is a recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Mentoring Award from the Social Contexts of Education Division of the American Educational Research Association. In addition to numerous honors and awards, she has given two TEDx talks on education. She is a co-editor of the Journal of Teacher Education, and her work has been published in several top-tier academic journals and social media outlets.
