Dually Identified: The Implications of English Learner Classification on Subsequent SPED Classification

This presentation will explore the findings from a study of how initial classification as an English Learner (EL) affects subsequent identification for Special Education (SPED). Leaders from SFUSD - Miguel de Loza and Margaret Farrugio - and two Stanford Graduate School of Education graduates - Angela Johnson at NWEA and Mark Murphy at the  University of Hawai'i at Mānoa - will discuss the motivation for this study, the findings, and future implications for policy and practice.

The event will take place on Friday, April 16, 2021 from 2:00 PM-3:00 PM over zoom, with presenters: Miguel de Loza (SFUSD Multilingual Pathways); Margaret Farruggio  (SFUSD Special Education); Mark Murphy (University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, Stanford GSE graduate); and Angela Johnson (NWEA, Stanford GSE graduate).
