This presentation is directed at identifying potential policy remedies for inequality in the United States with a specific focus on the short- and long-term benefits of early childhood education. To this end, Study 1 will focus on the short-term implications of mixed-age classrooms in Head Start for 3- and 4-year-old children’s academic and socioemotional development. Study 2 will examine both whether and why participation in early childhood programs has academic and social behavioral benefits for children through early adolescence. Finally, Study 3 will consider variation in the long-term benefits of early childhood education as a function of children’s subsequent educational experiences. Future research plans will also be discussed.

Dr. Arya Ansari is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning at the University of Virginia. He received his Masters and PhD in Human Development and Family Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on understanding the magnitude and nature of the mechanisms through which contextual factors influence the early learning and development of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the aim of informing policies and intervention programs that can benefit such children. Arya recently was selected as an AERA-SRCD Early Career Fellow in Early Childhood Education and Development.
