GSE Reunion 2019: What Should We Read Into the Children’s Literacy Debate?

GSE Reunion 2019: What Should We Read Into the Children’s Literacy Debate?

Friday, October 25, 2019
3:15pm - 4:15pm
Main Quad, History Corner/Building 200, Lower Level, Room 002

Since literacy has been a subject of study, there has been an ongoing debate about how children should be taught to read and write.  Headlines from the last year suggest this debate is still raging.  This talk explores the arguments on both sides of the debate and offers suggestions for how parents and educators can reconcile the debate as they think about how to support young children's literacy.

Rebecca D. Silverman, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education
A former public elementary school teacher, Professor Silverman studies language and literacy development and instruction of young children from diverse backgrounds. She is particularly interested in how to best support early childhood and elementary aged students who have difficulty learning to read and write.
