Parents define success for their child by wanting them to grow up to be happy, healthy people with fulfilling careers and meaningful relationships. More often than not, however, middle and high school students respond with a focus on test scores, earning admission into a good college, and getting a high-paying job. High pressure and incredible stress at school can interfere with the development of important life skills – the ability to be independent, adaptable, ethical, motivated, and critical thinkers.
Dr. Denise Clark Pope, ’88, PhD ’99 senior lecturer from the Graduate School of Education, will discuss her research on academic pressure in schools, ways to reduce stress without sacrificing achievement, and strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for every student.
