PhD Job Talk Feedback Session

PhD Job Talk Feedback Session

Friday, October 27, 2017
12:00pm - 1:30pm
Cubberley 115

Jing Liu, Stanford GSE Doctoral Candidate in Economics of Education, has graciously agreed to give his job talk, “Looking into Classrooms: Using Text-as-Data Methods to Understand Beneficial Teacher Practices at Scale”, to the GSE community on Friday 10/27/17, 12-1:30pm. This talk is based on one of the three papers comprising Jing’s full dissertation, and in it, Jing will discuss the use of word-to-word transcriptions of approximately 1,000 fourth- and fifth-grade English language arts classrooms and how he leveraged computational power to quantify six dimensions of teacher behaviors and derive three instructional factors. Following his talk, he will receive immediate feedback from Professors Ari Kelman and Ayita Ruiz-Primo as he would in a real job talk. Following their feedback, audience members will get the chance to ask both the presenter and faculty members questions about the process, the reasoning behind questions, and more. The session is open to all GSE students and is a valuable opportunity to learn about what makes a great job talk. Lunch provided with RSVP on the EdCareers Database, by Wednesday, October 25, 2017.
