PhD Mock Job Talk & Feedback Session

PhD Mock Job Talk & Feedback Session

Monday, October 29, 2018
2:30pm - 4:00pm
Cubberley 115

Stanford GSE Doctoral Candidate Tina Cheuk has graciously agreed to give her job talk, “Disciplinary Language and Literacy Practices in Science Classrooms” to the GSE community, specifically PhD students who are considering a career in academia. This talk will focus on how science teachers understand and approach the increased literacy demands in science in the context of new standards. Specifically, she looks at the disciplinary literacy practices, or specialized knowledge, resources, and practices that experts in science use to create, communicate, and construct knowledge in the discipline (Goldman et al., 2016; Moje, 2015; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Using case study methods, she studied how three teachers, recommended as exemplary by their peers—in upper elementary, middle, and high school settings—enacted disciplinary literacy instruction in their science classrooms. By growing our collective knowledge of how students use language and literacy practices to mediate their science thinking and reasoning skills over the course of their adolescence, teachers can design a more intentional disciplinary literacy-learning environment for their science classrooms.

Following her talk, she will receive immediate feedback from Professors Rebecca Silverman and Prashant Loyalka. Following their feedback, audience members will get the chance to ask both the presenter and faculty members questions about the process, reasoning behind questions, and more.

The session is open to all GSE students and is a valuable opportunity to learn about what makes a great job talk. Refreshments provided with RSVP in the EdCareers Database by Thursday, 10/25/18.
