RILE: LatinX Heritage Month Celebration of LatinX Education

Friday, October 15, 2021
12:00pm - 1:00pm
Zoom

Join us Friday, October 15th at noon as we will hear from legendary historian Dr. Al Camarillo, who will offer insights on where we’ve been in LatinX education and where we are heading. To compliment that, we will hear from an educational visionary and leader, Irene Castillon. She will share her vision of how modern educators are producing success for students in Latinx communities. We invite you to join us for this important discussion.

Al Camarillo is Professor of American History (and by courtesy Graduate School of Education) and the Leon Sloss Jr. Memorial Professor/Haas Centennial Professor of Public Service, Emeritus. He is the past president of the Organization of American Historian, the nation’s largest membership association for historians of the United States, and past president of the American Historical Association-Pacific Coast Branch. Camarillo is widely regarded as one of the founding scholars of the field of Mexican American history and Chicano Studies. He was born and raised in Compton where he attended public schools before entering the University of California at Los Angeles. He received his BA in History in 1970 and his Ph.D. in U.S. History in 1975. His dissertation was nominated that year as one of the best Ph.D. theses in the nation in American history.

Irene Castillon was the founding academic dean at Luis Valdez Leadership in San José, CA and is currently an assistant principal and a history teacher at Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School. Irene seeks to build structures and programs that affirm students by fostering teaching and learning that is liberatory and that intentionally disrupts systems of oppression. Irene was the inaugural recipient of the Early Career Alumni Excellence in Education recognition, awarded by the Stanford Graduate School of Education. She has also been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as part of the #LatinosTeach campaign. In addition, as a Heinemann fellow she researched the experiences of first-generation, Latinx college students navigating the 4-year college setting and published her findings through Heinemann. Irene is currently a doctoral student in the Department of Leadership Studies at the University of San Francisco.
