Quiet Study Space

GSE Study Space

At the GSE, we have worked with our amazing Facilities and IT teams to prepare and make available 4 study spaces in Barnum Center (Room 103, Room 116, Room 122 and Barnum Hub). To ensure that this resource is shared amongst GSE students, here are the arrangements:

  • each space has 2 reservation blocks daily (8am-12noon or 1pm-5pm), Monday through Friday;
  • reservations can be made a week in advance;
  • a student can reserve no more than two blocks per week;
  • requests will be filled on a first-come-first-serve basis;
  • for security, access to Barnum requires a key code (60755); save this on your phone.

Reservations

1. Go to Calendly https://calendly.com/stanford-gse to view available dates and times, and place your reservation. Once you have selected your desired day and time, you are redirected to an auto-filled SmartSheet. You then submit the SmartSheet to request a space assignment (see video demonstration).

2. You will then receive an email of your request that looks like this:

3. Once a Barnum space has been assigned to you, you will receive a reservation confirmation with the date, time and space from Terry Turner (tturner2@stanford.edu):

4. Please allow 48 hours for the confirmation.

Safety Protocol

To ensure that we keep each other healthy and safe, we ask that you abide by the following safety protocols:

  • Complete the one-time-only 10 minute training (once and done) - Stanford COVID-19 Hygiene Best Practices Training;
  • By 8 AM on the day of your visit, complete the Stanford Health Check online or via the Stanford Mobile app. Be prepared to show your approved badge if asked (a printed copy, photo, or screenshot of the approval health check webpage);
  • Only the student who made the reservation can be present in the assigned study space;
  • Face coverings must be worn at all times while studying/working in Barnum;
  • Maintain physical distancing by keeping at least 6 feet between individuals;
  • Practice frequent hand hygiene. There is soap and water/hand sanitizer in the restrooms and kitchen;
  • Clean work surfaces. Disinfecting wipes and trash cans will be provided in each study space.
  • All study spaces must be vacated 12noon - 1pm to provide ample time between visits for droplets to dissipate.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in keeping our community safe.

GSE Quiet Study Space FAQs

Access

How can I request access to the study space?
Go to Calendly https://calendly.com/stanford-gse to view available dates and times, and place your reservation. Once you have selected your desired day and time, you are redirected to an auto-filled SmartSheet. You then submit the SmartSheet to request a space assignment (see video demonstration).

What do I do before I come use the GSE study space?
Complete the Stanford Health Check online or via the Stanford Mobile app on the morning of your visit, have your health check ready to show, bring your Stanford ID, and wear a mask.

Which door do I use to enter Barnum?
Follow the signs on the doors and enter through the door closest to the Bookstore side. You will need to enter the code (60755) for the combination lock.

What do I do when I enter Barnum?
Wear a mask, find the space that has been assigned to you, use the wipes to wipe down the desk surface, and chair arms before you sit down.

If I want to cancel my reservation, who should I inform?
If your plans change and you will not be using the reserved study space, please let Terry Turner (tturner2@stanford.edu) know so that the space can be made available to other students.

What if I want to enter another building while I am in Barnum using the Quiet Study Space?
If you need to visit another building, you must submit a separate one-time request form in advance of your visit to Barnum. This is to ensure that we can conduct good contact tracing and the necessary and thorough space cleaning/sanitizing procedures.

Safety

When do I have to wear a mask?
At all times when you are in any GSE building.

Can I use the study space from 12noon - 1pm since that time is not reserved?
No. All study spaces must be vacated 12noon - 1pm to provide ample time between visits for droplets to dissipate.

How do I clean the work surfaces?
Disinfecting wipes and trash cans will be provided in each study space.

What do I do if I don’t feel well?
If you feel sick or think you have been exposed to COVID, you should contact Vaden Health Center for information about care and testing.

Use of Study Space

Can I study with a friend/classmate in the same space?
Quiet study spaces are for individual use only.

I live with a roommate. Can we study together in a GSE study space?
Quiet study spaces are for individual use only. In particular, our goal is to provide students with a quiet study space which they might otherwise not have in their residences or living arrangement.

Can I request a specific study space?
To ensure that we maximize use of all the spaces available, students will be assigned one of the 4 study spaces.

Print/Copy

What if I need to print/copy documents while in Barnum?
We are unable to provide access to printers/photocopiers located in GSE buildings. We have arranged for GSE students to receive a $50 printing credit for the Autumn 2020 quarter for use in Stanford residences and libraries. Students can print using this credit on your local residential printer: https://thehub.stanford.edu/services/residential-printer-locations. Students can also use the credit on the library printers (excluding the Law and SoM Libraries). Green Library and the East Asia Library are open by appointment: https://library.stanford.edu/libraries

If you would like to receive this print credit but have not requested it yet, please contact Academic Services staff Terry Turner (tturner2@stanford.edu).

Facilities

Can I use the water machine?
You may use the water machine in the kitchen.

Can I use the microwave and refrigerator?
We would like to limit the use of kitchen items to reduce the risk of contamination. If you do, please use disinfectant wipes to clean the surfaces.

Who do I contact if I need disinfectant wipes?
Email gsefaciliites@stanford.edu

What do I do if there’s a facility’s emergency, e.g. plumbing issue?
Place a Quick Response call at 650-723-2281.
