On this episode of "School’s In," GSE Dean Dan Schwartz and Denise Pope discuss autism diagnosis and treatment with Dennis Wall, an associate professor of pediatrics, psychiatry and biomedical data sciences at Stanford School of Medicine.
Wall’s lab focuses on developing innovative tools to help families of children with autism. His team is attempting to address two key bottlenecks in the healthcare system when it comes to autism: the ability to diagnose it and the ability to treat it.
Both issues are limited by the number of clinical practitioners who can perform both of these tasks, Wall says, so his team is building tools that use technology to help alleviate the burden. One example, which Wall discusses on this episode, is a product that uses Google Glass to help kids with autism better understand facial cues.
