U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will discuss the future of federal education reform and the new directions the Department of Education will take during President Obama’s second term at the opening session of the Education Writers Association’s annual national seminar on Thursday, May 2, at the Stanford Graduate School of Education.

The event will be webcast live, beginning at about 11:45 a.m. and running until about 1 p.m.

Duncan’s remarks are expected to include federal No Child Left Behind Act waivers for states and the outlook for congressional reauthorization of that law.

Duncan’s talk will be followed by a Q&A with the journalists and other communication experts attending the EWA opening session. Prior to Duncan, there will be brief welcoming remarks from EWA executive director Caroline Hendrie; Claude Steele, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education; and Barbara Schneider, president of AERA, the American Educational Research Association. EWA’s incoming president, Scott Elliott, the education reform reporter for the Indianapolis Star, will introduce Duncan, who is schedule to begin his speech around noon.

For those members of the Graduate School of Education who wish to view the event on a larger screen, there will be a live showing in CERAS 101. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first served basis, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Box lunches will be provided.
