The Stanford University School of Education offers more than 200 courses each academic year.  SUSE offers small classes—68% of courses have 20 or fewer students enrolled.  Courses at SUSE are taught by faculty members at the school, many of whom have joint appointments with other academic departments on campus, and courses are often cross-listed with those departments where appropriate—for example, with Sociology.  This reflects the inter-disciplinary nature of the School of Education curriculum within the school and across the campus. Independent Study Courses
Independent study courses are courses designed by a faculty member and an individual student.  Often, students take an independent study course when there is a particular topic they would like to explore that is not covered by the current course offerings.  Students approach professors directly to inquire about conducting an independent study with them.  When agreed, both meet regularly throughout the quarter to discuss readings/work.  Credit is assigned based on the work load taken by students; 3 hours of readings and meetings typically correspond to 1 unit of credit.  The students’ faculty advisors can help students determine whether to enroll in an independent study course and which faculty member would be best on subject matter. More ...

Course Selection
There are some course traditions at Stanford.  One of those traditions is the ‘shopping period’ where students do not have to finalize their course enrollment until the second week of classes. Many students at SUSE take advantage of this period and attend many classes before finalizing their study list for the quarter.   While each program of study includes course requirements, students are able to choose elective classes each quarter to tailor their educational experience to their own particular needs and interests.   Typically, the Add deadline for each quarter is 3 weeks after the first day of instruction and the Drop deadline is approximately 4 weeks after the first day of instruction. For current deadlines, see the Academic Calendar.

Cross-Listed Courses
Cross-listed courses refer to two courses that are being offered by the same faculty member, at the same time, and in the same room.  This happens when a course is offered for either undergraduate or graduate credit.  Additionally, if a faculty member has a joint appointment in two departments, a course could be offered in each of the departments where the faculty member has an appointment.  In both of these examples, students can enroll in either of the courses, and the faculty member receives separate class lists and grading rosters.  Several School of Education faculty hold joint appointments in other departments on campus.

Enrollment
Students enroll in courses utilizing the Stanford online system, AXESS.  The Time Schedule (list of scheduled courses, meeting times, rooms, instructor, etc..) is available for the entire academic year on AXESS.  Course registration opens approximately 3 weeks before each quarter begins, and enrollment is conducted on a first come/first enrolled basis, unless otherwise noted on AXESS by the instructor or the Office of Academic Services.  Typically, SUSE courses do not have an enrollment cap; students rarely find courses full to the point of prohibiting enrollment.

AXESS For Student Enrollment:
AXESS is the student information system where all Stanford students conduct most of their administrative business, including all administrative tasks related to courses.  New students may use AXESS at any time after receipt of the registration packet from the Registrar’s Office.  A SUNet ID and password are required.
AXESS allows students to:
Enroll in courses
File or adjust study list and elect grading options
Review grades
Request an official transcript to be mailed
Print a history of courses and grades
Print an Enrollment Certification
Conduct online course evaluations

Enrollment in Independent Study Courses:
A few more steps are necessary to enroll in independent study courses. The reason for this is that independent study courses can be offered by a number of different faculty members.  The Registrar’s Office needs to know the name of the faculty member with whom the student is conducting the independent study so that the grade roster can be generated for the faculty member who will be giving grades at the end of the quarter. Instructions for using AXESS to enroll in an independent study course may be found at: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/registrar/Axess/Studenthelp/

Enrollment Caps for Students Registered in Other Schools:
Some SUSE courses are in high demand and may not accept enrollment from non-SUSE students.  This applies to SUSE courses that are cross-listed with the Graduate School of Business.  For GSB students who wish to enroll in a cross-listed course as an Education course, the student must write to the Course Administrator at the School of Education
in order to be added to the sign-up list.  Because cross-listed courses are available via the GSB enrollment process, students are then notified of the status of their enrollment in the course under Education after priority is given to SUSE students.

Enrollment of SUSE Students in Stanford Graduate School of Business Courses:
