Rebuilding the system of public education will take many years of struggles and setbacks, as well as insights and epiphanies, to accomplish. But the rewards will be reaped with every child who experiences greater accomplishment and ability to contribute to the lives of others. Never before has the success, perhaps even the survival, of nations and people been so tightly tied to the ability to learn. Consequently, our future now depends, as never before, on our ability to teach.

What Is STEP?
STEP Master's Program website
The Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) is a nationally
renowned, 12-month, full-time innovative program of teacher
education leading to a Master of Arts in Education and a preliminary
California teaching credential. Stanford offers both a secondary
and elementary program. STEP is a unique, field
based program--from the moment teacher candidates arrive on
campus, they are actively engaged in classrooms. All of this
is done under the guidance of experienced teachers and STEP
faculty, who include some of the nation’s most influential
policy makers, experts on schooling, and curriculum specialists.
STEP seeks to prepare and support teacher leaders
working with diverse learners to achieve high intellectual,
academic, and social standards by creating equitable and successful
schools and classrooms. Desired outcomes for graduates
include an understanding of teaching as intellectual work
and as a caring profession, a depth of content knowledge,
and a repertoire of powerful pedagogical practices.
STEP graduates go on to become mentor teachers, play key roles
in national education policy, and start and lead schools.
Numerous individuals and foundations recognize the outstanding
contributions STEP graduates make to schools in low-income
areas. Ample fellowships, http://ed.stanford.edu/suse/programs-degrees/step/STEP-fellowship-Application.doc, are available to significantly defray the costs of enrolling
in STEP.
STEP actively seeks individuals of all cultures, races, religions,
and ethnic origins with outstanding academic preparation for
teaching their subject area and a commitment to working with
adolescents in diverse school settings. Previous coursework
in professional education is not required. There is no rigid
evaluation matrix with which we evaluate an applicant's undergraduate
education, work experience and accomplishments or professional
and academic references. We encourage recent graduates as
well as those with previous teaching experience to apply.
