Larkin High teachers selected for prestigious Stanford fellowship (CSET)

Two Chicago-area high school teachers will be traveling to Stanford this summer to participate in the Hollyhock Fellowship, hosted by CSET in July.

Chicago Tribune

Elgin, IL - Larkin High School teachers Bethany Vandercar and Brandie Burgess were selected to participate in the Hollyhock Fellowship program through the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. The program is geared to support talented early-career high school teachers. Vandercar graduated from Illinois State University in May, is in her first year teaching Algebra 1-2 to freshmen at Larkin, and is the school's math interventionist. Burgess is in her second year and teaches Biology and Chemistry at Larkin.

"Being accepted into the Stanford University Hollyhock Fellowship program is an astounding honor; I applied on a whim, considering this opportunity to be only a distant dream," said Vandercar. "My soul is so on fire for my students and their success, and I am ecstatic to learn about and implement new educational strategies from my time at Stanford this July."

The U-46 pair will join a cohort of 100 high school teachers from high-needs schools from across the country. The Hollyhock Fellowship is a two-year commitment which provides participants with two-weeks of professional development at Stanford University and year-round online support with colleagues.

"Being accepted to the Hollyhock Fellowship program, for me, just isn't an honor it's an opportunity," said Burgess. "It's an opportunity to better myself and hopefully benefit my school and district, and quite possibly save careers."
