SUSE Diploma Ceremony Information

Faculty will receive a survey via email in May to indicate whether they plan on participating in the SUSE diploma ceremony.

Cap & Gown Orders

 Faculty attire for commencement is available for order online February-April 2012 . You will be asked to provide information on your height, approximate weight, and head size for fitting of the cap and gown. Please also remember to check the box for Hood if you will need a hood for your robe. You may pick up your cap and gown beginning in early June at the lower level of the Stanford Bookstore.

Location

The SUSE Diploma Ceremony will be held in the West Oval Grove, located between the Oval and Herrin Hall.

Parking

Arrive early to get the best parking and ensure that you are not late to line-up. If parking around the Oval and in the surrounding areas (Lomita Drive, Roth Way, Museum Way) is difficult on Sunday, you may find parking in the parking structure on the corner of Campus & Roth or in the Tresidder parking lot. Procession Line-Up

Procession line-up is at 12:00 p.m. A SUSE staff member will meet you with instructions for the procession and the ceremony.

Order of Procession:

  • Flag Bearers: Matt Kloser, Jane Kim, and Gabriel Lomeli
  • Marshals: Rachel Lotan, Ira Lit, Arnetha Ball
  • Doctoral degree candidates
  • Master's degree candidates

SUSE's commencement speaker this year is Professor Emeritus Edwin Bridges.

Conferral of Degrees and Hooding Instructions

Follow along in the commencement program and, if you have a graduating doctoral advisee, please make your way to the front of the stage by the time their name is announced. The graduating student will give you their hood and turn toward the audience so that you can hood them. Dean Steele will then hand them their diploma and they will exit the stage and return to their seat. Please return to your seat after you have hooded your advisee.

Please note: Doctoral students will be hooded by their advisor and master's students by their Program Director. Graduating students will be instructed ahead of time to unbutton their hood, carry it on their right arm, and squat down a bit when being hooded if necessary. If you are given a buttoned hood, please unbutton it before attempting to hood your advisee.

 

Reception

Warm hors d'oeuvres, champagne and non-alcoholic beverages will be served immediately following the ceremony, in the oak grove behind the seating area.

Some Tips to Make the Ceremony More Enjoyable…

  • Dress for the heat; light clothing under gown is advisable. Sun block is recommended.
  • Comfortable, close-toed shoes are recommended for walking in the oak grove (there is debris from the trees in the diploma ceremony site).
