About the Speakers

Dr. Jill Biden has been an educator for more than three decades as a public high school English teacher, as a reading specialist and at a psychiatric hospital for adolescents. She currently teaches as a full-time English professor at a community college in Northern Virginia. Dr. Biden believes that community colleges are “one of America’s best kept secrets,” and has worked to underscore their role in creating the strongest, most educated workforce in the world. With the launch of the Biden Foundation, which advances opportunities for all people through educational programming and public policy analysis, Dr. Biden and her husband are continuing their commitment to higher education. Dr. Biden earned her BA from the University of Delaware, MA degrees from West Chester University and Villanova University and her EdD from the University of Delaware.

Jim Shelton, former Deputy Secretary of Education under President Barack Obama, leads the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s education work, partnering with educators, communities, researchers, scientists and engineers to ensure that every student is ready for and contributing to an ever-changing world. He served as the program director for education at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation from 2003 to 2010 and holds a broad range of management, policy and programmatic roles aimed at expanding access to personalized learning experiences. He earned his BA from Morehouse College and MA degrees in business administration and education from Stanford University.
