Building Equitable Classrooms
Dr. Lotan is Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP). Her teaching and research focus on aspects of teaching and learning in academically and linguistically diverse classrooms as well as topics in teacher education. Previously, she co-directed the Program for Complex Instruction at Stanford, where she worked on the development, research and worldwide dissemination of complex instruction, a pedagogical approach to creating equitable classrooms. For ten years before starting graduate work, Dr. Lotan taught English and French in junior high and high school.
Her current research interest include: Teaching and learning in heterogeneous classrooms; teacher education; sociology of the classroom; social organization of schools.
The Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) was founded in 2008 to foster research, policy, and practice to advance high quality, high equity education systems in the United States and internationally.
SCOPE engages faculty from across Stanford and from other universities to work on a shared agenda of research, policy analysis, educational practice, and dissemination of ideas and is an affiliate of the Stanford University School of Education and the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) at Stanford.
