When no one taught the teacher: Pondering teacher learning in a school program in Haiti with Kelly Kobza. In 2015, all of the Pi Gwo Byen students who took the 6th Grade Matriculation Exam passed it. When these kids, ranging in age from 12 -16, started in the program 3 or 4 years ago, they couldn't read or write and had never gone to school. Close work with the local teachers was key to this achievement. In her talk, Kelly will share thoughts about what challenges remain for reaching the goal of developing a community of teachers who are thriving in their work. She invites a dialogue to explore how a program such as this can grow to support teacher learning in sensitive and sustainable ways.

Kelly Kobza is the founding director of Greater Good International, a non-profit charitable organization focused on developing primary school education programs and sustainability projects in Haiti. In 2011 she founded Pi Gwo Byen in Anse A Ga lets on the island of La Gonave, a school program providing remedial education for children who have never attended school. Kelly has sixteen years' experience teaching in elementary and middle schools in Palo Alto and five years' experience teaching English as a Second Language in Spain. Kelly is an environmental and social justice activist who has worked with organizations such as Bay Area Action
(now Acterra), Beyond War and Amnesty International.
