EARLY LITERACY

Literacy Development through Concept-rich Instruction

What individuals understand and learn from reading depends to a significant degree on the knowledge they bring to the text. The most obvious way to enhance students’ world knowledge is to provide knowledge-enriching experiences in school; yet, literacy programs have long missed the opportunity to use reading, writing, and speaking as tools for developing knowledge. Instead, elementary literacy programs have largely emphasized the teaching of process (skills and strategies) and deemphasized content (concepts).  This perspective has led to a classic “stage-like” distinction between learning to read (in the primary grades) and reading to learn (once “basic skills” are in place).

Gina Cervetti (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is an associate professor of Literacy, Language, and Culture at University of Michigan’s School of Education. Professor Cervetti will discuss her longstanding work on integrated science-literacy instruction as a context for students’ literacy development.  She will summarize findings that demonstrate the value of content-rich, participatory instruction for young readers. She will also present a recent study on the use of conceptually-linked texts in support of conceptual learning, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension in English Language Arts. This work demonstrates how attending to what students are learning about as they acquire the skills and strategies of reading can enhance the value of students’ experiences with text.
