This presentation traces the evolution of an instructional approach designed to meet the literacy needs of ELs and their native English-speaking classmates in under-performing classrooms and schools. It begins with an explanation of the findings from developmental research that was conducted with diverse populations spanning from preK through 8th grade; these findings motivated a focus on how to effectively shift the instructional modelto better meet the needs of today’s students. In turn, the development and implementation of an academic language curriculum for use in mainstream middle-school classrooms will be described. Finally, the presentation will feature results from a large-scale evaluation of the curriculum’s impact on student achievement, as well as teachers’ perceptions of the curriculum and corresponding barriers and facilitators to their implementation, given the context of middle school literacy reform.
