Join your fellow GSE and SUSE alumni for eggs, mimosas, community-building, and updates from your GSE at the second annual Bay Area Alumni Brunch!

Associate Professor Bryan Brown and current GSE doctoral student Kathryn Ribay will take you on an interactive demonstration of their findings from a recent study examining how VR technology can help students learn in their own communities. Experience the lesson plans yourself using VR devices at your brunch table and learn how Stanford research is identifying ways to create culturally relevant pedagogy in science classrooms.

About the Speakers

Bryan Brown
Associate Professor of Education
Associate Dean for Student Affairs
Stanford Graduate School of Education

Bryan's research interests explore the relationship between student identity, discourse, classroom culture, and academic achievement in science education. His work in science education in urban communities focuses on developing collaborative curricular cycles and classroom pedagogy based on developing discourse-intensive instruction for urban learners. His research has expanded beyond his focus on science education to include issues of college access in urban communities.

Kathryn Ribay
Doctoral Candidate in Curriculum and Teacher Education - Science Education
Stanford Graduate School of Education

Kathryn also holds an EdM in school and instructional leadership from Harvard University and an MS in chemistry from Rutgers-Camden University. In her research, Kathryn studies the intersection of social justice and chemistry education and she has worked as a professional development facilitator with a focus on disciplinary PD. Before coming to Stanford, Kathryn spent nine years teaching chemistry and other sciences at public high schools in New Jersey.
