Dr. Slayton will discuss
findings from research she conducted in the Los Angeles Unified School
District. She will focus on the relationshp between leadership and teacher
practice improvement. In addition, she will offer her thoughts about what
leadership programs must do if they expect to facilitate the development of
leaders who are positioned to profoundly impact K-12 and higher eduction
environments.

Julie Slayton is associate
professor of Clinical Education at the University of Southern California. Prior
to joinning the faculty at USC, Dr. Slayton worked for the Los Angeles Unified
School District for 10 years where she served in a wide variety of roles. She
directed the district’s research and policy analysis division and working
directly with principals and coaches to improve their approach to professional
development and teacher practice. Dr. Slayton’s research has focused on the
relationship between district-provided professional development for teachers,
coaches, and administrators and changes in the quality of teacher content and
pedagogical knowledge and practice. She is the co-author of Charter schools:
Fulfilling the goals of public education in support of equity and social
justice. In Hughes, K., & Silva-Millman, S (Eds.) and Building the leaders
we need: The role of presence, andragogy, and instructional knowledge in
developing leaders who can change the face of public K-12 education, Emerald
Publishing. She holds a J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law and a
Ph.D. in Education Policy from the U.C.L.A. Graduate School of Education and
Information Studies.
