SCOPE Book Event: Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side

Monday, November 5, 2018
12:00pm - 1:15pm
CERAS 101

Join us for this discussion and book signing with Dr. Eve Ewing. Dr. Ewing is a sociologist of education and a writer from Chicago. She is the author ofElectric Arches, which received awards from the American Library Association and the Poetry Society of America and was named one of the year's best books by NPR and the Chicago Tribune. At this event, she will discuss her new book, Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side.

Ewing reveals that the Chicago school closing issue is about much more than just schools. Black communities see the closing of their schools—schools that are certainly less than perfect but that are theirs—as one more in a long line of racist policies. The fight to keep them open is yet another front in the ongoing struggle of black people in America to build successful lives and achieve true self-determination.

Dr. Ewing understands Chicago Public Schools from the inside: as a student, then a teacher, and now a scholar who studies them. Ewing grew up in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago and graduated from the University of Chicago for college. She earned an MAT in Elementary Education from Dominican University and taught middle school science in Chicago public schools before moving to Boston where she earned an M.Ed in Education Policy and Management, then a doctorate from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. Her work has been published in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, and many other venues. She also writes the Ironheart
series for Marvel Comics.
