Ingrid Nelson, PhD ’10 (Sociology of Education), assistant professor of sociology at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, is celebrating the publication of her first book, Why Afterschool Matters, published by Rutgers University Press. The book is a longitudinal analysis of why out-of-school-time programs influence some participants more than others and how out-of-school contexts play a role in educational outcomes for disadvantaged youth. She says, “I teach courses on race, education, and research methods and enjoy developing ways to involve undergraduate students in my research agenda which currently focuses on examining pathways to college among disadvantaged rural students.” In February, 2016, she also published the article, “Rural Students’ Social Capital in the College Search and Application Process,” in Rural Sociology.
