State-of-the-Art Spaces

The initiative in state-of-the-art spaces recognizes that modern research, learning, and work spaces are critical to the Graduate School of Education’s vision for the future. This dynamic new campus gathers faculty, students, and staff into a central location and provides an interdisciplinary hub. It also becomes a prototype for learning spaces for the university and across the globe.

Our design objective is to enable social interactions that advance the goal of improving lives through learning. These buildings will serve as a strategic and centralized resource for the full university to engage in transforming learning.

Key Features

Building Community

Education is collaborative to its very core, but current GSE facilities do not promote formal and informal gatherings for learning. The new campus will center around a spacious atrium and outdoor courtyard, as well as a wide variety of meeting spaces.

Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration

Solving complex problems in education requires collaboration across many fields, including social and behavioral sciences, humanities, information science, neuroscience, engineering, and medicine. The new campus will provide research labs, data visualization spaces, and convening areas to provide a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Facilitating contemporary teaching and research

The new campus will include the space, tools, and technology to become a prototype for education leaders globally. Flexible classrooms designed to be inclusive and interactive also serve as research and demonstration spaces. Technology for data collection and visualization, virtual teaching and learning, and hands-on experimentation will fuel creativity and innovation.

Expanding our reach

The GSE brings education leaders from around the world to Stanford to share research and engage in professional development. Conference, event, and convening spaces will allow the GSE to enhance and expand these programs to ensure broad dissemination of learning and resources.

Supporting Stanford’s vision for transforming learning

The Transforming Learning initiative of Stanford’s Long Range Vision places the needs of learners at the center of educational practice. The vision also stresses the importance of partnerships that accelerate impact in the world. The new GSE buildings at the heart of the Stanford campus are a physical expression of these priorities.
