Girls and minorities face a stereotype of not being expected to succeed in STEM fields, and that prejudice can be self-fulfilling, says Steele.

School of Education Dean Claude Steele sat down with PBS News Hour's Spencer Michels to discuss current research on how to address the dropout crisis, and the prospects for programs that engages girls in science, engineering, technology, and math. He also shares his concerns about the real-world implication for gender stereotypes--including its role in the dropout rate--and some of the other proactive solutions schools and companies can take to counterbalance them.
