Tennis and teaching

Dick Gould, '59, MA '60, first realized he wanted to be a teacher when he was 11 years old, taking tennis lessons from an instructor who made the game feel like an exciting adventure. After earning his master’s in education at Stanford in 1960, he went on to work at the university for more than 50 years—first as head coach of the men’s tennis team, then as director of the tennis program. His wife, Anne, '72, MA '80, is also a GSE alum and taught tennis at Stanford for 30 years. She's now the business manager at EPATT, a tennis and tutoring program for families in East Palo Alto. Dick turned 80 last fall and retired in January. His advice for future teachers? "Make it exciting," he says. "No matter what you’re teaching, in any field, you have to transmit your passion."
