Future Dining Experience: Increasing Student Lunch Participation in SFUSD

Future Dining Experience (FDE) is an SFUSD initiative developed with the design consulting firm IDEO to address the problem of low student participation in school meal programs. Design-oriented interventions, currently being rolled out in pilot schools, aim to encourage more students to eat lunch. We identify root causes of low participation at one school, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, and solutions we believe must accompany the FDE interventions in order for them to succeed. These recommendations include integrated nutrition education programming, modifying food offerings and presentation, and leveraging school site resources to increase engagement.
