School gardens can support academic achievement through inquiry-based, experiential learning by investing students in their own education, their school communities, and the world around them. With nearly an acre of land and support of From the Ground Up, a food justice non-profit, the garden at The Urban Charter School (TUCS) has great potential. Yet, this garden appears to be rarely used by teachers as an instructional tool. If school gardens provide added value to schools in high-need communities, how can From the Ground Up and TUCS collaborate to achieve these benefits? Our project explores the root causes of the underutilization of school gardens and suggests opportunities to integrate it into current instruction.
