Empathy and self-awareness are vital skills for community-engaged service work. However, students in service projects often only develop these skills through experience in the field. This can put communities in harm’s way due to student inexperience. Muddy Waters prepares students to engage with communities effectively and ethically through an immersive, interactive ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ story of a service project. Students participate in a ‘book-club’ workshop designed to create insightful conversations around community engagement through reflection and discussion of the story and service work. Through Muddy Waters, students develop empathy and self-awareness in a safe environment before they engage with real-world communities.
