The Knowles Teacher Initiative recently announced that 15 Stanford graduates are among the 34 early-career teachers to be awarded its 2018 teaching fellowships.

The Teaching Fellows Program recognizes exceptional high school science and math teachers with five-year fellowships that include stipends, funds for professional development, grants for teaching materials and opportunities for leadership development. The initiative was established by Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles in 1999 to increase the number of high-quality teachers and, ultimately, improve math and science education in the United States. 

The following Stanford graduates are those among the 2018 cohort of Knowles Teaching Fellows:

Camille Erskine will begin teaching at Carlmont High School in Belmont, Calif., during the 2018-19 school year. She earned a BS in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of California at San Diego in 2016 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Gail Gallaher will begin teaching at City Arts & Tech High School in San Francisco during the 2018-19 school year. She earned a BA from Pomona College in 2017 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Diarra Gueye began teaching at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Calif., during the 2017-2018 academic year. She earned a BA in mathematics and economics from Macalester College in 2011 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Ian Hagmann began teaching at San Lorenzo High School in San Lorenzo, Calif., during the 2017-18 school year. He earned a BA in geosciences from Franklin and Marshall College in 2011, an MS in geological and environmental sciences from Stanford in 2015 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2017.

Katie Johnson will begin teaching at Mountain View High School in Mountain View, Calif., during the 2018-19 school year. She earned a BS in biological sciences and a BA in psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2016. She also earned an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Micaela Kaye began teaching at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Calif., during the 2017-18 school year. She earned a BS in mathematics and psychology from Wesleyan University in 2016 and an MA in education from Stanford University in 2017.

Caitlyn Macrae began teaching at Menlo-Atherton High School in Menlo Park, Calif., during the 2017-18 school year. She earned a BS in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2014 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2017.

Marcos Munoz will begin teaching in Texas during the 2018-19 school year. He earned a BS in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2016 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Joonsung Oh will begin teaching at South San Francisco High School in South San Francisco, Calif., during the 2018-19 school year. He earned a BA in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2017 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Tom Robbins began his teaching career at Denver School of Science and Technology - Stapleton High School in Denver, Colo., during the 2017-2018 school year. He earned a BA in chemistry from Dartmouth College in 2011, a PhD in chemistry from Stanford in 2016 and is working toward an MA of teaching in secondary science from Relay Graduate School of Education.

Katherine Rogers began teaching at Mountain View High School in Mountain View, Calif., during the 2017-18 school year. She earned a BS in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of California at Davis in 2014 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2017.

Mary Sargious will begin teaching at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Calif., during the 2018-19 school year. She earned a BA in biological sciences from the University of California at Irvine in 2016 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Julia Smith will begin teaching at Phillip & Sala Burton Academic High School in San Francisco during the 2018-19 school year. She earned a BA in mathematics from Pomona College in 2017 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Satoshi Suga will begin teaching at McClymonds High School in Oakland, Calif., during the 2018-19 school year. He earned a BS in electrical engineering from the University of California at Irvine in 2008, an MS in engineering-signal processing and communications from UCLA in 2016 and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.

Alison Valentine will begin teaching at Santa Catalina School in Monterey, Calif., during the 2018-19 school year. She earned a BS in chemistry and a BA in theater and performance studies from Stanford in 2016. She also earned an MS in chemistry and an MA in education from Stanford in 2018.
