Pam Grossman named dean of Penn's Graduate School of Education

Grossman, a Stanford professor since 2000, is the faculty director of the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching. Her new role begins Jan. 1, 2015.

Pam Grossman, the Nomellini Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford, has been named dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.

Grossman’s appointment, announced Wednesday by Penn, is effective Jan. 1, 2015.

A former English teacher, Grossman earned her doctorate from Stanford and has been a professor at the university since 2000. Her research interests include teacher education and certification; English education, literacy and literature; and professional development.

Deborah Stipek, incoming dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education, said Penn is very fortunate to have someone as experienced and wise as Grossman.

“She will be missed at Stanford, but we are proud to see her assume such an important leadership role and look forward to working with her in her new position,” Stipek said.

Grossman helped found and is now faculty director of Stanford’s Center to Support Excellence in Teaching (CSET), which brings together faculty with an interest in research, design and development activities that improve the quality of K-12 teaching. The center is currently focused on supporting the work of early-career teachers and recently received a large gift to launch the Stanford Hollyhock Fellowship program to support and retain early-career high school teachers.
